Close Up on Ohio LB Bolden

Joe Bolden, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound Ohio OLB continues to add offers from top programs, including Penn State. Fight On State talked to Bolden about his recruiting status, his new offers and what he is looking for in a college program.

Four-Star Cincinnati OLB prospect Joe Bolden got an unexpected offer last week.

That offer came from Penn State, or to Bolden — Linebacker U. "It really just came out of the blue," Bolden said.

The Colerain HS standout continued, "It all went through my uncle [Tom Bolden] who is my head coach, and Coach (Ron) Vanderlinden."

Bolden has never visited Happy Valley but would like to before he makes his decision.

"Being a linebacker, I like Penn State," Bolden said. "Although I don't know much about them right now."

The more he learns about the Lions, the more he likes them. But who is at the top of his list?

"Not really any favorites right now," Bolden said. "But Michigan, Penn State and Kentucky are all up there."

So what exactly is he looking for in a school?

"Academics are the number one thing I look for," Bolden said. "And I am undecided on a major."

Bolden is strong in the classroom. He reports a 3.9 core GPA. But that's not all he's good at -- he plays baseball for Colerain, batting third and playing outfield.

"Playing both (in college) would be nice," Bolden said. "But I know it doesn't have to be that way in college."

The Cincinnati native is also a big family man.

"I have a very tight knit family," Bolden said. "Every Sunday all my uncles, aunts and cousins go to my grandma's house for a dinner."

He added, "Other than that I have three close friends, and we all do pretty much everything together."

He continued, "They are like brothers to me."

One of those friends is Notre Dame signee and Bolden's high school teammate, Jarrett Grace.

Bolden holds offers from Penn State, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, North Carolina, Boston College and Cincinnati, among others. He added an offer from Arkansas Thursday night.

Even with national recruiting interest, one thing is for sure when it comes to Bolden. No matter if he plays football, baseball or both in college, he is giving a hard look to the Nittany Lions.
