According to a Penn State source, the sophomore will open the game vs. Indiana State this weekend. But redshirt junior Matt McGloin is expected to see significant action, as well.

The Penn State coaching staff has finally settled on a starting quarterback for Saturday's season-opener against Indiana State at Beaver Stadium.

But the QB battle that's been taking place in Happy Valley is hardly complete.

A team source said quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno informed his charges that sophomore Rob Bolden would be the Nittany Lions' starter against the Sycamores. But redshirt junior Matt McGloin is also expected to see meaningful snaps in the game.

The decision was made Thursday. Head coach Joe Paterno was not asked about the situation on his prerecorded radio appearance Thursday evening. Offensive tackle Quinn Barham, appearing live, said the team still had not been informed of the starter.

Bolden began the 2010 season as the starting QB at Penn State, the first rookie to receive that honor in a century. He got the nod in eight games before eventually being replaced by McGloin. On the season, Bolden completed 112 of 193 passes for 1,360 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

McGloin started the final four games of the season, connecting on 118 of 215 passes for 1,548 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. But five of those picks came in a lopsided loss to Florida in the Outback Bowl.

Bolden did not play in the bowl game and the next day announced he wanted to transfer out of Penn State. But Paterno refused to release him from his scholarship, and Bolden agreed to stay with the team through the spring and, ultimately, summer and preseason.

Penn State's preseason practices were closed. But sources close to the program said Bolden and McGloin split first-team reps throughout.
