DALLAS -- Penn State starting quarterback Matt McGloin did not practice with the Nittany Lions Tuesday, their first day in Texas to prepare for a TicketCity Bowl matchup with Houston Jan. 2.
McGloin was injured in a fight with teammate Curtis Drake in the PSU locker room on campus Dec. 17. He smashed his head on the floor and was briefly hospitalized. He has not practiced since.
Approached by a reporter before practice at Bishop Lynch High Tuesday, McGloin would only say he is, “day to day.”
Penn State interim head coach Tom Bradley said he was not certain whether McGloin had been diagnosed with a concussion following the altercation with Drake.
“You’d have to ask Dr. (Wayne) Sebastianelli what the actual medical term was,” Bradley said, referring to the PSU team doctor. Sebastianelli was waiting for clearance from the program’s Athletic Communications staff before commenting.
Bradley did say McGloin is being tested every day to determine if he is fit to practice.
In the meantime, the Lions’ quarterback corps has gotten even thinner since the team arrived in Texas. Redshirt freshman Paul Jones has been declared academically ineligible for the game and Drake, who plays Wildcat QB, was left home from the trip for what Bradley called “personal” reasons not related to the fight.
Sophomore Rob Bolden, a former starter, has been taking first-team reps in McGloin’s absence. Walk-on Shane McGregor is his backup. True freshman Bill Belton sees time as a Wildcat quarterback.
