When Montoursville's David Batkowski got a call from Penn State associate head wrestling coach Cody Sanderson, the 2012 PIAA third-place winner at 138 pounds suddenly had his college track turned upside down, as he originally was set on going to Maryland.
“It was kind of a last minute thing. I got a text from Luke Frey (a teammate at Montoursville and current Nittany Lion wrestler) and he told me they were interested,” Batkowski said.
“I had planned on going to Maryland, but I made it to a couple of Penn State matches, and that's where I always wanted to go.”
Batkowski, who finished his senior season 41-1, said his communication with Frey and Sanderson ultimately made the decision to go to Penn State -- which he called his “dream school” -- a no brainer.
“Luke told me how great everything was, and it was pretty much a no brainer once Coach Cody called me,” Batkowski said.
“Maryland was my number one before Penn State called, and Penn State has always been my dream school.”
Batkowski will be on campus in the near future to meet with the coaching staff. Currently at 152 pounds, he said he would like to get as big as he can.
“They haven't really said where they want me to be, maybe 149 or 157, but I'm visiting soon to talk more about that with them,” he said.
