The top celebrity at the 2012 Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament on campus Friday was new Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien.
O'Brien, who announced his 2012 starting quarterback (Matt McGloin) not long before teeing off, generated a serious boost in media coverage for basketball coach Pat Chambers' tourney.
And that was a good thing, considering Chambers could not golf due to recent knee surgery.
A gaggle of media followed O'Brien through the first few holes of the tournament. Then the vast majority of them disappeared.
But as the event was going on, FOS learned through well-placed CVC sources that O'Brien was involved in a pre-tournament trade. The group with which he was slated to golf made a special request to hit the course with Penn State basketball letterman Steve Wydman. So a deal was negotiated with another team and the swap was made.
How did O'Brien do on the course? Why was the big trade made? What does a fellow named "Cubby Bear" look like? And what did O'Brien and Fran Fisher talk about?
For the answers to those pressing questions and more, check out our CVC video.
There is a spoiler below the video. Check it out after you watch for the real (not tongue-in-cheek) story behind the trade. Click the "full screen" button in the bottom right of the video player to see a larger version.
SPOILER: The team that traded for Wydman golfed with him a few years ago and enjoyed themselves so much they wanted to do it again. He is known for having a great sense of humor and during his days with the PSU basketball team (he lettered from 1992-94) was considered one of the best interviews on the team. They were doing a deadpan joke (a very good one) when they claimed they did not know who O'Brien was.
