The Rundown: Minnesota Game Week
It's Minnesota game week. The Illini return home for Dad's Day and a tribute to veterans of the armed forces. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:42 p.m. - First, coach Tim Beckman's thoughts on Saturday's 52-22 loss @ Ohio State. "When you're playing a team that's undefeated and you have an opportunity to go into their place and play them you just can't not score when you get the opportunity in the red zone," he said. "You have to do more than just kick field goals, and you have to play 60 minutes of football. We gave up a couple big strikes in that second quarter. I was proud of the way the kids continued to play throughout the game, but it wasn't good enough to defeat a team like that. My hat goes off to Ohio State and what they've done. We have to build from there." - While the specifics haven't been finalized, Beckman hinted at special plans for this weekend's tribute to dads and veterans. "We're going to do some things maybe a little different that haven't been done before to showcase the dads that are very, very important to the players and this football team and also some special things for the veterans," he said. Talk about the Rundown HERE on the premium message board. - Jonathan Brown had a medical appointment Monday afternoon concerning his injured shoulder. "I'll know more tomorrow," Beckman said. The junior LB left Saturday's game during the first quarter. - News about Josh Ferguson (hip) sounds encouraging. The redshirt freshman RB didn't play against Ohio State, but did take part in Sunday's practice. "We did run and do all those sorts of things, which he did take part in," Beckman said. "He also did the workout Friday morning that our players on campus that don't make trips with us do. We work out at six in the morning and he was involved in that." - Minnesota enters 5-4, the losers of four of it's last five games. Beckman's general thoughts on the Golden Gofers: "A Jerry Kill football team. You see them get better and better each week," he said. "The defense is very aggressive. Offense, they're playing with a quarterback that's really taken off over the last three games for them. Played Michigan very good I thought. Their Purdue win was tremendous as you watch it on film, but they're progressing. They're getting better and better each week. Those first four wins that they had really pushed them to where they are now." - So what exactly is the trademark of a Jerry Kill football team? Beckman's response was, um, interesting: "A guy that fights every day of his life. Probably as close of a person that you want to get to know because he and wife are inseparable. They do everything together. His football program is run just like his life is. You know what he does is the reason why the success Minnesota has come with the five football wins that they have." - Here's a little more info on Kill, a coach I'm sure many of you are familiar with: He coached Southern Illinois 2001-07 and Northern Illinois from 08-10, where he won the MAC title in his final season. He took over Minnesota in 2011 and has compiled an 8-13 record. His days in the MAC led to a relationship with Beckman. "Just started being friends when we were competing against one another… that's where we got to know one another," Beckman said. "It's progressed these last three years. He's a special person no question." - The name to know this week: MarQueis Gray. He's a 6-4, 250-pound athlete that's spent time at wide receiver, running back and quarterback this season. He has three touchdowns rushing and five passing. "You see MarQueis out there, all 250 pounds of him out there at wide receiver," Beckman said. "He's a special talent. They're utilizing their talent. They're fitting. They're doing the same things that we're trying to do. Fit this here and fit that there and make sure you've got your 11 best players on the football field."
