Interest Building in Belfort
Malique Belfort knows schools are still awaiting his SAT score before extending a written offer, but more and more schools are taking notice. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Belfort is speaking the most with West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Florida State, and also having discussions with Syracuse and Oregon. "I talked to (assistant) coach (Shannon) Dawson on Wednesday and he said he wants me to come down officially, but he said first he wanted me to come down unofficially because we haven't met in person" said Belfort, a receiver at Staten Island (N.Y.) Tottenville High. "So he wants me to come down for the Kansas game, and then come back the next week with a lot of recruits for an official visit." Belfort, who has 45 catches for 890 yards and nine touchdowns, said Dawson spoke about the Mountaineers' need to add a few more receivers to the 2013 class. "Their receiver situation is not stable," Belfort said. "There are a lot of opportunities for me to play early there, my freshman year, if I wind up going there." Belfort also likes West Virginia's spread offense. "Four receiver sets, one running back in the backfield, throwing the ball a lot; It's the same thing I'm used to so it's a great fit," Belfort said. "It's a real comfortable playbook for me to get used to because I was using it the last four years at Tottenville." Florida State offered Tottenville running back (and Syracuse commit) Augustus Edwards a few weeks ago, and are now looking hard at Belfort. "They saw my film and are very interested," Belfort said. "(Assistant) coach (Rick) Trickett, coach Jimbo Fisher, they were both impressed with my film. They said I have great range, I get down field great, I'm a deep threat and I have great hands and size. "(Assistant) coach (James) Coley called me and we spoke for about 45 minutes and he said he was going to come next week. He said they have three wide receivers in their class committed right now and they're looking to take more. He said if everything goes well next week I'll end up with an offer." Belfort knows Christopher Columbus High (Miami) receiver and Florida State commit Jesus Wilson since the two played in a summer all-star game together. "I knew about Florida State growing up," Belfort said. "They always had great players, they always have players in the nfl, (drafted) in the first round, the second round. They're a powerhouse in the ACC. Everybody knows about Florida State." Belfort added he speaks with Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken about an official visit next month. "I've been talking to (Monken) for a while," Belfort said. "He said he was impressed and they had a couple of receivers committed there, too, He said they're looking for another big kid, and he said they were going to find out how many scholarships they have left. He said they have one or two and he wants me to come down on an official visit in December." Another school making a recent inquiry is Oregon, and Belfort said he is in contact with Ducks director of player personnel Jim Fisher. "He said he saw my film and he sent it to the receiver coach (Scott Frost)," Belfort said, "and he emailed me the next day and said ‘coach Scott Frost loves your highlight tape and he thinks you're a tall, rangy receiver who can get down the field.' He said if they get any receiver scholarships to open up, I'd be the first one to get it."
