Lions Get a Leg Up in Recruiting

Upon further review, New Jersey kicker/punter Chris Gulla decides to walk on to the Penn State football program.

On second thought, New Jersey kicker Chris Gulla did not need further visits to decide on a school. Tuesday, he committed to walk on at Penn State.

Gulla visited University Park last week and came away saying the Nittany Lions were at the top of his list when it came to possible walk-on destinations. He was mulling visits to other schools and waiting to see if any scholarship offers might comes.

But after hearing from one other suitor early this week, he decided to go ahead and call PSU assistant Ron Vanderlinden with the news that he wanted to attend Penn State. He plans to arrive for the second summer semester and will vie for the kicking and punting jobs.

“Penn State is the best fit for me,” Gulla said. “I was waiting to see what South Carolina was going to do, but once they only offered a preferred walk-on spot, I knew Penn State was where I wanted to go. Like I said last week, they were my number one walk-on choice.”

Gulla attends Toms River (N.J.) North High.
