QB Ferguson Officially on Board

The junior college standout sent his letter of intent to Penn State Wednesday. He is the first prospect to sign an LOI with the Lions since NCAA sanctions hit in July.

Penn State's first recruiting class of the post-sanction era officially has its first member.

Wednesday, Tyler Ferguson, a quarterback from College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif., sent a signed letter of intent to PSU via fax. Wednesday was the first day junior college players could sign their letters.

In doing so, Ferguson became the first member of the Nittany Lions' Class of 2013. He is the only juco prospect expected to join the class.

High school seniors cannot sign letters of intent until Feb. 6. Those high school prospects who intend to graduate early and enroll at Penn State in January -- who include FOX Sports NEXT five-star tight end Adam Breneman -- are bound to the school by NCAA transfer rules once they enroll.

A Bakersfield, Calif., native, Ferguson threw for 2,614 yards and 22 touchdowns in his lone season at College of the Sequoias. When he arrives at Penn State in early January, he will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

As things stand, Ferguson and rising sophomore Steven Bench will be the only scholarship quarterbacks on PSU's roster in the spring. FOX Sports NEXT five-star QB prospect Christian Hackenberg has committed to sign with the Lions in early February, meaning he would arrive on campus during the summer.

Last July, Penn State was hit with NCAA sanctions stemming from the school's handling of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Part of the punishment was a reduction in scholarships to 15 per year.

But PSU can bring in as many as 20 prospects this year, with up to five (including Ferguson and Breneman) counting toward 2012's scholarship total.

Another key sanction was the ability for current members of the team to transfer to other FBS programs and be eligible to compete immediately. This runs through the start of preseason camp next August.

However, it does not apply to incoming prospects. Once they sign and/or enroll, they are bound by conventional NCAA transfer rules.
