CALLING CARD: OC John Donovan

John Donovan

See what Penn State offensive coordinator John Donovan had to say about the progress of his offense heading into the 2014 season.

Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg has “been exactly what we hoped he would be. He's a very talented kid with a lot of ability.” He's been a leader on and off the field.

• The entire offense has “made strides,” though he did not want to single out any one player. “Everyone's kind of been getting better. I think were a lot more ahead of where we were in the spring, for sure.”

• On the WRs, “We're pretty solid across the board.” Geno Lewis is “the guy” out there. DaeSean Hamilton has been “great in camp.” Chris Godwin and Saeed Blacknall “have learned a lot in a short amount of time.”

• TE Brent Wilkerson is “much improved” since the spring. He is very versatile.

• On the O-line, some freshmen have been “force fed,” and have had to step up to provide depth.

• They believe they have UCF well scouted. However, they are expecting some surprises from the Knights' defense. If they come, “our system allows us to make those adjustments” on the fly.

• They have picked a backup QB but he'll leave it to James Franklin to reveal who it is. He said during a game week, the first-teamer gets the most snaps. The second-teamer is next and the third-teamer gets the fewest snaps.

• All of the TEs have been trained to play multiple positions, including F and Y, and also split wide and even line up in the backfield. “They all can do whatever we ask them to do.”

• Likewise, on the OL, they have had to “cross train” guys to play multiple positions due to the lack of experienced depth. But this is not new. He and OL coach Herb Hand had to do the same thing when they were at Vanderbilt.
