Wide-Receiver Excited For The Future
Posted Nov 13, 2003
LionNews recently spoke with Amherst Central HS wide receiver
about the current state of affairs at Penn State and the strength of the verbal commitment he made to the Nittany Lions in late June.
Amherst, NY (Amherst Central HS)
Despite the fact that Amherst finished the season with a losing 4-5 record, Mark managed to tally nearly 60 receptions for roughly 900 yards and 12 touchdowns, marking the best season of his young career. Did the fact that he increased his speed measurably from last year to this year allow him to catch more long balls this season?
"I'm actually just catching more short ones and taking them longer which is exciting," said Mark when LionNews spoke with him just prior to the
Is the verbal commitment he made to
back in June still strong?
"Oh yeah, definitely, 100 percent, no question," said Mark definitively.
"I've been talking to Coach Anderson every week and then Coach Carter every once or twice a week.
"I just can't wait to be a part of it and get coached by them and just help them improve as much as possible. They have so many great players. I'm just really excited to eventually be a part of it."
Mark, who has increased his weight to 213 pounds, will most likely be the only true wide-receiver prospect signed by Penn State this coming February.
"When I was talking to Coach Carter, he said that I'll probably be the only true wide-receiver that they'll take, but they're looking at another athlete who could play a number of positions like possibly wide-receiver, corner or safety or something."
Has Mark been to any PSU home games yet this season?
"I haven't been able to go to any yet. I'm going to the
one in later November, but I've been watching all of them on TV and stuff and the Penn State Football Story, so that keeps me involved."
Rubin keeps in touch with several of the other Penn State verbal commitments.
"I've been talking to a lot of them online and over the phone a couple times, [guys] like
. I still haven't met any of them in person."
Are the others concerned about the current state of the Penn State football program?
"There's more excitement about the opportunity to help, to get things back to where it was with the National Championship possibilities and the Big 10 Championships. I think that's just what everyone is looking forward to, just getting there and helping out as soon as possible."
Hopefully, Mark can contribute early and bolster a receiving corps that has had numerous problems this season holding on to the ball.
