Jared Gaither and Derrick Williams

There was a stir in the Jordan Center just before the Penn State basketball team tipped off its game against Northwestern Saturday. Entering the arena at the event level were a pair of blue-chip football recruits from Maryland.

Star receiver Derrick Williams, from Eleanor Roosevelt High in Greenbelt, committed to the Nittany Lions in December and enrolled at PSU earlier this month. Jared Gaither, a massive — and we mean massive — lineman also from Roosevelt (by way of Hargrave Military Academy) was close by his former teammate as they entered the arena to applause.

Gaither, who has said he will attend Maryland, is apparently taking other visits just to be sure he's comfortable with his choice.

He sure seemed comfortable at the hoop game, smiling and talking with Williams and PSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr. There were smiles all around when the student section began chanting, "Welcome, Derrick, Come Here, Jared."

The two, along with Kiski Prep quarterback Daryll Clark (another PSU commit) stayed for the entire game, a rarity for football recruits.

Gaither also spent a lot of time with Lion defensive end Matt Rice. Rice, one of the most physically impressive PSU football players at 6-foot-5, 270 pounds, was dwarfed by the 6-8, 330-pound Gaither.

Nittany Lion quarterback Michael Robinson was also in the house, reading to a group of kids before the game.

Did we mention that the Nittany Lion hoop team beat Northwestern, 65-62, ending a five-game losing streak in the process?
