Posted Feb 19, 2005

Lift for Life, Penn State's annual weight lifting event which raises money for kidney cancer research, is getting showcased on a national stage. The event's three co-founders been invitd to address the upcoming National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) Conference at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando, Florida on Monday, February 21.

Former Nittany Lion football squad members Dave Costlow, Damone Jones and Scott Shirley will address the national organization which serves colleges and universities who are dedicated to educating student-athletes and using the power and appeal of sport to positively affect social change.

Scott Shirley talked about the upcoming conference, saying, "It's a phenominal opportunity for Lift for Life to be on a national stage. I think it shows the impact the event is making on the education of and fight against kidney cancer. We are thrilled to have this type of interest and hope it helps to take the event to a whole new level."

The "Penn State Lift for Life" debuted in 2003 and has raised more than $51,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association to aid in the fight against the disease for the 31,000 Americans who are afflicted with kidney cancer each year. The 2004 event alone raised in excess of $38,000.

Ninety-two members of the Penn State football team participated in the "Lift for Life" competition last July. Twenty-three four-person teams competed in 11 events designed to test mental and physical toughness and edurance.

Four members of the 2003 and 2004 Penn State squads have immediate family that had, or are fighting, kidney cancer. The Nittany Lions' goal for the event is to help raise money and awareness for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney cancer.

The third "Penn State Lift for Life" will be held on Friday, July 15, 2005 during Arts Festival weekend in State College.
