Over the past nine years, the Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament has raised more that half a million dollars to combat the disease. With a record 54 groups participating in this year's event, that figure should jump dramatically.

The festivities begin with an on-campus reception Thursday night, continue with the tournament Friday (on Penn State's Blue and White Golf Courses) and conclude with a banquet Friday evening. There is a new lead sponsor for the event this year, Sheetz.

Former players in town for the tournament include Milwaukee Buck Calvin Booth, Dan Earl, Ed Fogell, Titus Ivory, Michael Jennings, Glenn Sekunda, Tyler Smith and Mark DuMars.

Other notables on hand: Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser, former PSU coach Bruce Parkhill, Penn State football All-American Dennis Onkotz and Brad Scioli of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.

Now led by second-year Nittany Lion coach Ed DeChellis, the Penn State version of the tournament consistently ranks among the top 10 CVC events in the nation in terms of dollars raised. DeChellis' predecessor, Jerry Dunn, started it.

A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the tournament, the items up for bid including two tickets to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, travel and dinner packages, memorabilia, artwork, and dinner for six at the home of DeChellis and his wife, Kim (we're hoping she cooks).

You can view the auction items at cvcpennstate.org and bid by contacting Lea Asbell Swanger (ELA1@psu.edu).

The majority of the money raised by the Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer tournament stays in the Centre Region.
