FOS Audio: Bush Chimes in on JoePa
George W. Bush
George W. Bush

Posted Jun 14, 2005

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is known for dodging tough topics. He was at it again Tuesday, this time in a friendly discussion with the most powerful man in the world.

President Geroge W. Bush was on the Penn State campus to address the state FFA convention, and Paterno, a longtime friend of the Bush family, rode with the president from the airport to the site of the speech, Eisenhower Auditorium.

Along the way, as Bush told the story, he said, “let's talks football.” Paterno replied by saying he wanted to discuss what was going on in Washington, instead. The packed house laughed at the line.

Paterno knows a thing or two about politics. When George H. W. Bush was running for president in 1988, the coach offered a seconding speech at the Republican national convention.
