The source did not know the exact nature or extent of the injury, but said Kinlaw will not play in Saturday's season-opener against South Florida at Beaver Stadium and will likely be out for a Sept. 10 home game with Cincinnati.
Kinlaw is listed as Penn State's second-team running back on the preseason depth chart, behind Tony Hunt and ahead of Austin Scott. He is also listed as a kickoff return man.
Kinlaw sustained a torn right ACL as a true freshman in 2003 and received a medical redshirt that year. In 2004, he gained 93 yards on 23 carries, and returned 10 kickoffs for a team-best 198 yards.
