Grassroots Effort at Stadium

The race is on, as it's out with the old turf and in with new sod at Beaver Stadium. Penn State's next home game is Oct. 1 against Minnesota.

The Beaver Stadium turf, long considered to be among the best fields in the nation, has been a disaster this year. Through three games — and an unusual run of dry weather — divots had been coming up all over the place.

“I was shocked when we played the first game,” Penn State football coach Joe Paterno said.

Between the Cincinnati game Sept. 10 and Saturday's Central Michigan contest, the grounds crew actually re-sodded small patches all over the field (kind of like hair plugs for men). After Saturday's action left another pockmarked pitch, Paterno suggested the crew might attempt to re-sod the entire field before State's next home game — Oct. 1 vs. Minnesota.

On Monday, the process began as the crew ripped up the old turf, with a machine carrying it into the back of small dump trucks. The trucks, in something of a fire bucket line, disposed of the old turf near the construction site of the nearby baseball stadium.

New sod is expected to be in place by Thursday.

All of which is fine by Paterno, “as long as they don't ask me to cut it,” he said after the CMU game.

Then he added this gem: “I'll send my wife over once she gets better.” Sue Paterno is still recovering from a broken leg.
