Maybin Makes it Official

More than a week after the news broke, Aaron Maybin confirms his commitment to Penn State.

Aaron Maybin made it official and announced his commitment to Penn State today at a press conference from Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City, Md.

Maybin took an unofficial visit to Penn State when the Nittany Lions upset Ohio State in front of an electric crowd at Beaver Stadium. That day, Maybin told other recruits, current Penn State players and the staff that he committed to the program. Today, Maybin made it official and announced the commitment to the public.

Maybin is a four-star defensive end according to Scout.com. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect chose Penn State over offers from Florida, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others.

With Penn State losing both starting defensive ends Tamba Hali and Matthew Rice to graduation, combined with the departure of Amani Purcell who transferred to Hawaii, Maybin will likely compete for one of the two-deep spots on the depth chart in 2006.

In fact, Penn State will return only one defensive end who has seen meaningful playing time, that being current redshirt freshman Josh Gaines.

While Maybin must add some more mass to his frame to play defensive end in college, his athleticism is one of the main reasons some of the nation's top college football programs went after him. Still, Maybin has the frame and the athleticism to be a contender to see playing time as a true freshman.
