In less than two quarters of work, Michael Robinson posted 263 yards of total offense and equaled the school record by accounting for six touchdowns to help the visiting Nittany Lions build a 49-3 first-half lead at Illinois. The senior quarterback completed 11 of 18 passes (61.1 pct.) for 194 yards and four touchdowns and added seven carries for 69 yards (9.9 avg.) with two more scores before leaving the game prior to PSU’s last possession of the first half.
His six touchdowns equaled an 88-year-old Penn State record set by Harry Robb against Gettysburg in 1917. Robinson’s four touchdown strikes marked a career high and was the second-highest single-game total in school annals behind only the five scoring passes thrown by Rashard Casey (2000) and Tony Sacca (1991).
Robinson guided the Nittany Lions to touchdowns on six of the seven possessions he was in the game. Penn State’s 56 points before the break broke the school record for points in a first half set when the school jumped ahead of Fordham 55-0 in 1947. The Virginia native has accounted for 22 touchdowns on the year (nine rushing, 13 passing) and is seven behind Lydell Mitchell’s school record of 29 scores established in 1971.
For all games, Robinson appears among the top 10 in the league in total offense (4th with 251.9 ypg), pass efficiency (7th at 135.0) and passing yardage (9th at 192.6 ypg). He picks up the first Big Ten weekly award of his career.
