Scout.com caught up with Egg Harbor Township head coach Tony DeRosa and he reports that Cedric Jeffries has indeed decided to commit to Penn State. Jeffries had committed to Virginia earlier in the year, but had a change of heart after several Virginia coaches had taken other jobs.
"It was a tough decision for Cedric, Virginia did a great job with him," DeRosa said. "There's a great opportunity for him at Penn State. He came home from his visit there and discussed things with myself and his parents and he decided Penn State was the best place for him."
According to DeRosa, Penn State plans on playing Jeffries at safety and his coach thinks he can excel there.
“He is a great cover two safety, he plays the half field well,” DeRosa said. “He supports the run very well and he is fast and can play the alleys well. He really gets over the top on the deep routes.”
Penn State loses several members of its secondary to graduation, which will present the possibility of early playing time for Jeffries.
“I think he has an opportunity to play early,” DeRosa said. “They say he has a chance to play right away. It doesn't matter with him. He is such a great character kid if they ask him to redshirt then that is what he will do.”
DeRosa estimated that Jeffries finished the 2005 season with around 63 tackles, three interceptions and 15 pass break-ups.
Jeffries is the 13th player to commit to Penn State for the Class of 2006.
