DeChellis will be honored on Sunday evening, June 3 at the Seventh Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Invitational hosted by the Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa. The tournament will be played June 4-5. Among the other coaches expected to attend the event are: Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Jim Calhoun (Connecticut), Fran Dunphy (Temple), Phil Martelli (St. Joseph's), Jay Wright (Villanova), Kelvin Sampson (Indiana), Jeff Capel (Oklahoma), Mark Gottfried (Alabama), Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh) and Gary Williams (Maryland).
DeChellis joins a distinguished list of past recipients of the Man of the Year Award that includes Boeheim, former Missouri coach Norm Stewart and former Cornell coach Scott Thompson among others.
DeChellis is in his fourth year leading Penn State's CVC Celebrity Golf Tournament, which has become one of the most anticipated events of the season. Penn State's local CVC chapter, which also encompasses a Penn State student group, raised more than $100,000 last year to support cancer victims and fight cancer in the Centre region. Penn State's CVC Golf Tournament will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year and has raised nearly $600,000 for the American Cancer Society since its inception, the majority of which stays in the Centre County. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
Coaches vs. Cancer was started in 1993 as the nation's top basketball coaches organized to raise awareness of cancer risk, early detection, and prevention. The program, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches, has raised more than $25 million to further cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
