The 26th Annual Second Mile Golf Classic tees off on the Penn State campus Thursday. NFL Hall of Famer and former Nittany Lion Lenny Moore is the honorary chair of the event, which raises money to help disadvantaged children.

The Second Mile Classic was the brainchild of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. In what would become The Second Mile's flagship fundraising device, it earned a modest $5,000 the first year it was played, 1980.

In the years since, the Classic has raised $2.65 million. Meanwhile, Sandusky's Second Mile program has grown into a philanthropy that reached more than 300,000 children across the Commonwealth in 2005.

Born in Reading, Pa., in 1933, Moore was a standout halfback and kick return man at Penn State in the mid-1950s. He was a first-round draft pick of the Baltimore Colts in 1956, when he was named NFL Rookie of the Year.

He was considered one of pro football's first great pass-catching running backs, hooking up with quarterback Johnny Unitas to form an almost unstoppable combination. The duo helped lead the Colts to the 1958 NFL title, as Moore caught five passes for 99 yards in an overtime win over the New York Giants in the championship tilt.

Moore still lives in Baltimore and has dedicated his life to helping children through his work with the city's Department of Juvenile Services.

Other former Penn State standouts slated to attend the event are Kurt Allerman, Chris Bahr, Lou Benfatti, Keith Conlin, Craig Fayak, Scott Fitzkee, Matt Kranchick, Mac Morrison, Chet Parlavecchio, Glenn Ressler, John Skorupan, Blair Thomas and Leo Wisniewski.
