Commitment Countdown: Yancich is a Lion

Scout.com's Bob Lichtenfels presents the breaking news from the big announcement in Washington, Pa. Yancich selected Penn State over UConn, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Michigan State.

UPDATE 6:10 p.m. Yancich chooses Penn State. He pulled out a poster of Joe Paterno leading the the Lions out of the tunnel at Beaver Stadium and the crowd at the school, which grew significantly over the past 30 minutes, cheered wildy. Yancich then pulled on a PSU hat.

UPDATE 6:00 p.m. PC was supposed to start by now. Typically, it is delayed a bit. It is very hot in the school. KDKA is putting a mic on him now.

UPDATE 5:45 p.m. Looks like things will cool down a bit now leading up to the decision. We'll let you know of any developments as soon as they happen.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m. The press conference is in the back of the school in a hallway between the regular gym and the auxiliary gym. There are not a ton of people here at this point.

UPDATE 5:37 p.m. Yancich is carrying a bag full of hats of all the teams from which he is picking. The hats are from Pitt, WVU, Penn State, Michigan State and UConn. Yancich is heading to an auxiliary gym with his dad and coach. There is nothing in the family's clothes that gives anything away.

UPDATE 5:34 p.m. Yancich has arrived at the school and is wearing a long-sleaved, light blue button-down shirt.

UPDATE 5:26 p.m. Bob Lichtenfels is at the school and ready for the press confernece.

Some quick notes: Yancich will be a team captain this year and a third-year starter. He is one of the most heavily recruited played in Trinty history with nearly 40 offers. His name is pronounced YAN-sitch. He has run a 4.40 40-yard dash and contest-benched 375 pounds and squatted 500. He still holds a state record in the dead lift (545 pounds) for the 13- to 14-year age group, which he set several years ago.

Yancich has a 3.2 GPA and scored a 960 on his math and verbal for the SAT.

He is a two-sport letterman at Trinity (football and basketball).

He will be the fifth Hiller to commit to a BCS program over the past three years. He will be the 33rd Hiller since 2005 to continue his football career in college.

A product of Trinity High in Washington, Pa., Mike Yancich has expressed interest in Penn State, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Michigan State, among others.

Scout.com regional recruiting analyst Bob Lichtenfels will be on hand as the press conference at Trinty High and will send in live reports before, during and after the big announcement.
