Evans Lands Big Ten POW

Maurice Evans had a career day against Indiana on Saturday. In honor of his effort he was named Big Ten defensive Player of the Week.

Maurice Evans, Penn State's sophomore defensive end from Brooklyn , N.Y. (Christ The King), hit career highs with 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two key forced fumbles in the second half that led to a pair of field goals in a narrow five-point road victory against Indiana.

The sophomore defensive end registered six tackles, a pass breakup and fumble recovery while his tackles for loss pushed the IU offense back 38 yards. With Penn State clinging to a 23-17 lead in the third quarter, Indiana drove to the PSU 19-yard line. On the ensuing first down, Evans broke through to sack the quarterback and force a fumble, which he recovered and returned 55 yards to the Hoosiers' 13-yard line to set up a field goal.

On the first play of Indiana 's next offensive drive, the New York native recorded another sack and forced fumble which was recovered at the Hoosiers' seven-yard line. The resulting field goal gave the visitors a 29-17 lead on their way to a five-point triumph. Evans currently leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally with 10.5 sacks. He garners player of the week honors for the first time in his career.
