Plea-sing Ending to Fight Fiasco

Bowman, Taylor plead guilty to disorderly conduct, face fines and community service. And with that, PSU can move on from two highly publicized incidents that resulted in nearly a dozen felony charges but not a single felony conviction.

The smoke has finally cleared from a pair of well-publicized fights involving Penn State football players last year. In all, eight Nittany Lions were hit with 11 different felony charges stemming from the two incidents.

And in the end, every felony charge was dropped, thrown out or reduced to a misdemeanor via plea bargain.

According to the Centre Daily Times, linebacker Navorro Bowman and defensive tackle Phillip Taylor both pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct Friday in connection with a fight at the HUB Oct. 7. Both were initially slapped with felony aggravated assault and lesser charges, though the felony charge against Taylor was dropped earlier this year.

The duo was ordered to pay fines and perform community service, according to the CDT.

The first fight last year occurred April 1, and resulted in felony charges of burglary and criminal trespass being filed against defensive tackle Chris Baker and safety Anthony Scirrotto. Defensive end Jerome Hayes, cornerback Justin King, linebacker Tyrell Sales and defensive back Lydell Sargeant were charged with felony criminal trespass, too. A myriad of lesser charges were filed against the players, as well.

Charges against King were dropped before a preliminary hearing. After the hearing, a judge dismissed charges against Hayes, Sales and Sargeant.

Baker and Scirrotto were both bound over for trial. But the trial never happened. Both eventually reached agreements in which they pleaded guilty to misdemeanors and were ordered to pay fines and perform community service.

Baker also faced a felony aggravated assault chart in connection to the HUB incident, but that was wiped out by his plea agreement, too.
