Lineman Chooses Penn State
LionNews Recruiting Update

Posted Dec 4, 2002

The Nittany Lions received a big commitment, both literally and figuratively, Tuesday morning when 6'4", 300-pound New Jersey lineman Dan Mazan told Coach Fran Ganter that he will attend Penn State.

Name: Dan Mazan
Position: OL
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 305 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.9
Bench press: 435 pounds
School: Carteret HS, Carteret, NJ

Penn State Assistant Head Coach Fran Ganter visited Dan Mazan (MAY-zon) at his school Tuesday morning. He asked Dan if he was ready to commit to the Nittany Lions and Mazan gave him the good news.

"I knew that was the school I wanted to go to," Dan said. "When I visited there, I went to the Nebraska game and I went to the Michigan State game, I just had a certain feeling for the school, a vibe. The coaches are nice and the atmosphere is unbelievable.

"The people there, it's all Penn State.  That's the big show in town.  The fans are incredible and the staff is great.  It's like nothing I've ever experienced before.

"It's big-time football with good academics."

Dan admitted last month that the Nebraska game was a turning point for him in the recruiting process.

"I wasn't thinking about Penn State, but then when I went up there for the Nebraska game, it changed my mind completely."

Dan claims scholarship offers from 41 schools.  He had planned to take his 5 official visits before making a final decision, but obviously things have changed.

"I was going to take an official visit to Nebraska, one to Ohio State, one to Florida and the other one was a toss-up between Florida State, BC and Syracuse.  I'm just going to go on the Penn State one now which is scheduled for December 13."

Penn State is recruiting Mazan to play guard.

"I'll probably play guard, but they said they don't care how tall you are, you don't have to be 6'6" to play tackle," Dan told LionNews a few weeks ago.  "They're putting the best 5 guys out there.

"If I'm the third guard, but I could be the 1st or 2nd center, they said they'll put me at center. They just want the best guys out there and the best opportunity for you to play."

Miscellaneous note: Dan recently got ordained as a deacon at his church.
