Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had a busy weekend. On Saturday, his Nittany Lions walloped Michigan State to secure a Big Ten title and BCS bowl bid.
Sunday, he had hip-replacement surgery at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa., to alleviate the hip pain and subsequent lack of mobility that forced him to work Penn State's last eight games from the press box.
Tuesday, the 81-year-old was released and headed to his home in State College to begin rehabilitation. This according to a press release issued by the PSU athletic department late Tuesday afternoon.
The full release is as follows:
"Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was released early from the Mount Nittany Medical Center and returned home today. He no longer experiences hip-related pain and will continue his rehabilitation at home following hip replacement surgery on Sunday.
"Coach Paterno has been working on bowl preparation schedules while in the hospital and intends to begin evaluation of last Saturday’s 49-18 win over Michigan State at home. Paterno is expected to resume a coaching regimen on Monday, Dec. 1, when the players return to school following the Thanksgiving break."
