SHORT REPORT: Field Narrowed to Three

Jones and Bolden

One of the four candidates for Penn State's starting quarterback job is headed for a redshirt. Find out who in our Short Report.

And then there were three.

Penn State's four-man race for the starting quarterback job has been narrowed down to a three-man field.

Wednesday, true freshman quarterback Paul Jones was told he will be redshirting for the 2010 season, according to FOS sources.

That leaves sophomore Kevin Newsome, redshirt sophomore Matt McGloin and true freshman Robert Bolden still in the mix for the starting job.

But sources tell FOS that McGloin and Bolden appear to have an edge on Newsome at this point.

Newsome, who played as a true freshman in 2009, also has a redshirt available.

People within the program view the redshirt as a positive for Jones. Though he enrolled in January and has done a good job whipping himself into top shape (he goes 6-foot-2, 239 pounds), they believe he needs more time to get completely comfortable with the offense.

The highlight of Jones' spring was the Blue-White Game, where he tossed a pair of 18-yard scoring passes.
