True freshman named No. 1 quarterback for Penn State's season-opener against Youngstown State.

And the winner is?

True freshman Robert Bolden.

Bolden, who enrolled at Penn State in July, has been named starting quarterback for No. 14 Penn State's season-opener against Youngstown State at Beaver Stadium Saturday.

“Based on what we have seen to this point, Bolden has a slight edge right now, but we are confident all three quarterbacks are ready to go and hope to give them an opportunity to play until we settle on the one that gives us the best chance to win,” Nittany Lion head coach Joe Paterno said.

Bolden beat out redshirt sophomore Matt McGloin and sophomore Kevin Newsome for the starting job.

But, as Paterno indicated, all three QBs are expected to play in the opener.

Bolden will be the first Nittany Lion true freshman to start at quarterback since Wally Richardson was an emergency replacement against Cincinnati in 1992.
