Analysis: When the Patriots give up on a third-round pick after the first year, that should tell you something. UDFA QB Brian Hoyer was a big reason why O'Connell was waived. Hoyer is their No. 2 QB for now. Ben Watson sticks on the roster. Ventrone, according to a league source, is a vested veteran, so he's not subject to waivers. Lenon should find interest for teams needing a backup ILB/MLB. Smith should find interest from teams looking for a No. 2 TE. The move to trade Seymour shouldn't be too much of a surprise. He's on the final year of his contract and isn't the same player he once was. Grady had a very good preseason for the Colts.

Lewis really made no impact at all with their offense, so it's not that much of a surprise that he was cut. But after veteran WR Joey Galloway, the Patriots don't have much depth at the position. Lewis along with an undisclosed draft choice in 2010 were acquired from the Eagles for a 2009 draft choice. Lewis had three years left on his contract with a base salary of $650,000 for 2009. Lewis, with the Eagles, was one of their best practice and special teams players, but rarely did anything of note. I do recall a Vikings' source saying that they were always concerned when they played the Eagles because of Lewis' ability to stretch the field.

Saints have a roster exemption for Arnoux until 9/21. Saints have only three DTs on their active roster.

Analysis: Hartsock will take over the No. 2 TE role with the Jets. No real surprises at all here. Trading for O'Connell is interesting. While several reports said they aren't looking to deal Kellen Clemens, some league sources said the Jets are simply trying to put the word out that teams won't be able to steal him away for nothing. Then again, Clemens is the only quarterback they have on their roster who has starting experience. But they are still carrying four quarterbacks at the moment. The Packers two backup quarterbacks last year had no starting experience and they got away with it.

A source said the Jets had free agent LB Ryan Fowler in for a visit on Monday. Fowler was released by the Titans last weekend. Interesting story with Fowler. Back in 2007, Fowler was talking to the Titans and Eagles during free agency. Tennessee GM Mike Reinfeldt had a family situation to take care of and the Eagles were made aware of it. They gave Fowler a chance to negotiate with the Titans once Reinfeldt was able to get back to work, and Fowler wound up signing with them.

Analysis: You know it's bad when Garcia gets cut and his young clone Bruce Gradkowski makes their roster. And Charlie Frye also made it. Miller, because of his kick return ability, could find some interest. Greenwood is a decent backup at this point of his career. He signed too late to make any kind of impact. Sands, if motivated, can help a team. Seymour is capable of playing end or tackle in Oakland's 4-3 defensive scheme. He'll also give them some solid inside pass-rushing help. Raiders have two spots left on their practice squad.

Analysis: Too bad Ingram got hurt as the coaches had big plans for him. That's two ACL injuries to the same knee. With Babin coming back, the team tried to trade DE Bryan Smith, but had no takers, so he was waived. Booker was a major disappointment to say the least. He tries to run outside too much. Eldra Buckley, as expected beat out Booker. Vick can't practice until week three unless they activate him from the exempt list before then. It's obvious they don't think he will be a quarterback, more of a hybrid player. Eagles carrying just two TEs at the moment. Wilhelm being cut was a bit surprising. Eagles have been looking for MLB help for weeks. Eagles are keeping Reggie Brown and a whopping seven WRs for now. No one was willing to take his contract, that's why he's staying. Plus, it didn't help that teams knew he was running with the third-team offense. It's not like that's a secret. Turn on the games. Booker and Smith didn't get claimed.
